Egg donation is a fertility treatment option that offers hope to women who are unable to conceive using their own eggs. It may be recommended when the ovaries do not produce healthy eggs, when egg quality is very poor, or when there is a risk of passing certain genetic conditions to a child.
At Nordica Fertility Centre, egg donation can help women who still have a healthy womb but are unable to produce viable eggs for pregnancy. The donated eggs are fertilised with sperm from the recipient’s partner, and the resulting embryos are then transferred into the recipient’s uterus. In some cases, embryos created from donor eggs may be frozen and quarantined before use, depending on the treatment plan and medical advice.
Egg donors may be known or anonymous, depending on the arrangement and the agreement of those involved. At Nordica Fertility Centre, egg donors are carefully screened and are usually expected to meet the following criteria:
In some cases, women who produce a high number of eggs during their own assisted reproductive treatment may be invited to donate unused eggs.
The egg donor goes through a treatment process similar to an IVF cycle. This includes ovarian stimulation with fertility drugs followed by egg collection, which is usually performed vaginally. The donated eggs are then fertilised in the laboratory with sperm from the recipient’s partner. After fertilisation, the resulting embryos are transferred into the uterus of the recipient.
In some cases, embryos created from donor eggs may be frozen and kept in quarantine before transfer, with repeat testing carried out on the donor before use. Where this option is chosen, the couple should be informed that freezing and storage may affect success rates.
All egg donors are screened for infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and syphilis. Screening for genetic conditions such as sickle cell disease is also carried out, along with blood group and Rhesus factor testing. Physical characteristics may also be considered during donor matching.
Counselling is an important part of the egg donation process to help both the donor and the recipient understand the emotional, psychological, and legal implications involved.
Nordica takes care to ensure that both donors and recipients fully understand the medical, emotional, legal, and ethical aspects of egg donation. Counselling and screening form an important part of the process for everyone involved.
