(IMSI)
Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Injection (IMSI)
Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Injection (IMSI) is a specialised component of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) that is used primarily for the treatment of male factor infertility. IMSI is an advanced version of ICSI (link), and it involves magnifying sperm more than 6,000 times in order to be able to select the most viable ones.
With IMSI, the structure of the sperm is more accessible, making it possible to exclude sperm with suspected defects from being injected into the mature eggs. This significantly increases the chances of pregnancy and reduces the likelihood of miscarriages.
When is IMSI Considered?
IMSI is usually considered in the following situations:
- For men with very low sperm count less than 2 million and with less than 20% motility.
- For men whose partners have had recurrent abortions in the first trimester (to exclude the contribution of damaged sperms).
- For men above 45 years.
- For couples in which there is no fertilization during the previous cycle either through IVF/ICSI.
- For couples, who despite having a good number of eggs, have poor fertilization.
- Cases of sperm with bad morphology (shape)
