Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection, commonly known as IMSI, is an advanced fertility treatment used mainly in cases of male factor infertility. It is a specialised form of IVF and a more advanced version of ICSI.
In IMSI, sperm are examined under very high magnification, often more than 6,000 times, to help embryologists select the healthiest and most viable sperm for injection into the mature egg. By comparison standard ICSI treatment only offers 200 to 400 times the magnification of sperm. This detailed view makes it easier to identify structural defects and avoid using sperm that may be less suitable for fertilisation. As a result, IMSI may improve the chances of successful fertilisation and pregnancy, while also helping to reduce the risk of miscarriage in certain cases.
