Advanced Sperm Selection for Improved IUI and IVF Success Rate - Microfluidic Sperm Sorting

Microfluidic sperm sorting is an advanced sperm preparation technique used to select healthier sperm for fertility treatment. It is a chemical free method that uses a disposable chip to separate sperm in a gentler and more precise way before use in IUI, IVF or ICSI. This method has been shown to help reduce sperm DNA fragmentation, especially in men with high DNA fragmentation index, also known as DFI.

One of the common causes of high sperm DNA fragmentation is oxidative stress, which can lead to the production of reactive oxygen species, also known as ROS. In conventional sperm preparation, centrifugation is often used, and this process may increase the generation of ROS. Microfluidic sperm sorting avoids centrifugation and therefore reduces the risk of additional oxidative stress during sperm preparation.

At Nordica Fertility Centre, microfluidic sperm sorting may be considered as a more natural and gentle approach to selecting sperm with better motility, morphology, and genetic quality. It is designed to imitate the natural sperm selection process that takes place in the female reproductive system.

When Is Microfluidic Sperm Sorting Considered?

Benefits of Microfluidic Sperm Sorting

Microfluidic sperm sorting works by imitating natural sperm selection and choosing sperm with better functional quality. The selected sperm are often associated with improved morphology, better genetic quality, and stronger motility and viability when compared with unsorted sperm.
Studies show this technique significantly increases clinical pregnancy rates (up to 35.56%), boosts embryo quality, and results in more top-grade blastocysts.

Microfluidic Sperm Sorting at Nordica Fertility Centre

Nordica Fertility Centre is among the few clinics in West Africa to adopt microfluidic sperm sorting, a more advanced alternative to traditional methods such as centrifugation and swim-up, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impact sperm DNA integrity.

Our clinical experience shows that this technique significantly reduces DNA fragmentation while improving fertilization, embryo development, and blastulation rates, enhancing overall treatment outcomes. This innovation further strengthens our expertise in the management and treatment of male factor infertility, delivering better chances of success for our patients.
