Surrogacy

Surrogacy may be considered as part of your fertility treatment journey if you have a medical condition that makes it impossible or unsafe for you to carry a pregnancy and give birth.

Surrogacy involves a woman carrying and delivering a baby for another person or couple who are unable to do so themselves. The woman who carries the pregnancy is known as the surrogate or gestational carrier, while the individuals planning to raise the child are known as the intended parents. Surrogacy is usually considered when there is no healthy or viable womb available to carry a pregnancy successfully.

Nordica surrogacy is carried out in a way that prioritizes the welfare of the child, ensures the voluntary autonomy and health of the surrogate, and securing legal clarity for intended parents

Types of Surrogacy

There are two main types of surrogacy:

Traditional Surrogacy
Traditional surrogacy is a form of surrogacy in which the surrogate uses her own egg and is therefore genetically related to the baby. This type of surrogacy is less common today, partly because of the wider availability of IVF and because it may involve more legal complexity.

Gestational Surrogacy
Gestational surrogacy is a form of surrogacy in which the surrogate has no genetic connection to the baby. In this case, the embryo is created through IVF and transferred into the surrogate’s womb. The child may be biologically related to one or both intended parents, depending on whether donor eggs or donor sperm are used.

In either case, surrogacy may be arranged as compassionate surrogacy or compensated surrogacy, depending on the legal and practical agreement involved. This usually determines whether the surrogate is reimbursed only for expenses or also receives additional compensation.

How Does Surrogacy Work?

The surrogacy process usually involves medical screening, counselling, legal agreements, and fertility treatment planning before pregnancy is achieved. Where gestational surrogacy is used, IVF is required to create embryos for transfer to the surrogate. Throughout the process, careful coordination is needed to support the health and wellbeing of both the surrogate and the intended parents.

Nordica only offers gestational surrogacy, this is where there is no genetic connection between the baby and the surrogate. Unfortunately, the Nordica cannot help you to find a surrogate, however, there are several surrogacy agencies who will be able to do this and facilitate the legal matters concerning all parties involved.

Surrogacy at Nordica Fertility Centre

At Nordica Fertility Centre, the surrogacy process is approached with care because it involves important medical, emotional, and legal considerations. Nordica’s surrogacy programme is designed to support intended parents through the process by providing medical screening, psychological counselling, and legal guidance to help everyone involved make informed decisions.

Types of Surrogacy services we offer

1. CREATING EMBRYOS FOR SURROGACY – I HAVE MY SURROGATE

Where the intended parent(s) will undergo IVF using their own egg and sperm, or using either donor eggs or sperm.

Intended parent(s) and surrogate will undertake their screenings and treatment preparations in parallel.

2. CREATING EMBRYOS FOR SURROGACY – I DON’T HAVE A SURROGATE YET

Where the intended parent(s) will undergo IVF using their own egg and sperm, or using either donor eggs or sperm.

All screenings and pre-treatment preparation are undertaken for the intended parents at this point. Meaning all requirements for the embryos are met pre-emptively so fewer steps are required when a surrogate is identified.

3. USING PREVIOUSLY CREATED EMBRYOS, I HAVE MY SURROGATE

Where embryos already created are transferred into the surrogate via a frozen embryo transfer cycle.

Depending on which requirements have been previously met, further screenings and pre-treatment preparations will be undergone by the intended parents and surrogate.
