Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, known as ICSI, is a specialised form of In Vitro Fertilisation, also called IVF, developed to help overcome male factor infertility. It has become an important fertility treatment option and has significantly reduced the need for donor sperm in many cases.

ICSI involves the injection of a single healthy sperm directly into each mature egg. This means the sperm does not need to penetrate the egg on its own, as this step is carried out in the laboratory by an embryologist. The treatment process is similar to conventional IVF, but the main difference lies in the method of fertilisation.

When Is ICSI Considered?

Is ICSI Safe?

ICSI is generally considered a safe and well-established fertility treatment. Current evidence does not show a significant increase in the risk of congenital abnormalities in children conceived through ICSI. However, in some cases of severe male infertility, there may be an underlying genetic cause. This means there is a possibility that the genetic condition linked to the father’s sperm problem could be passed on to the child.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) at Nordica Fertility Centre

At Nordica Fertility Centre, the ICSI process begins with the same preparatory steps used in standard IVF, including ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval. Once the eggs are collected, they are placed in a specialised culture medium in the laboratory. A single sperm is then selected and carefully injected into each mature egg using specialised equipment. After successful fertilisation, the resulting embryos are monitored in the laboratory for 1 to 5 days before transfer into the woman’s womb.
